One day...One day....

Gracie has a point.

What is it with Evil Geniuses and their undying optimism?

There has to be a point where they reach critical mass. You have tried to kill Batman. 15 times. Each time you were caught. Each time you were thrown in jail or sent to Arkham Asylum.

At some point you have to wonder if it would be easier to try another city than Gotham or Metropolis. (although they do seem to have the weakest sentencing of any large metropolitan area- cause you are always getting out pretty quick - and the loosest security set ups on their jails...)

But somehow - through it all - and this is a testament to their genius - they never ever have a moment of self doubt. Never has a second where they stop and think - hey... Maybe I am not really cut out for this supervillian thing. Maybe I should have been a lawyer... They just forge ahead with an even more dastardly plan than the one before it - with the absolute confidence that they are on the right path and that this plan IS THE ONE! Where every other one has failed - this time - I shall MAKE THE EARTH CRASH INTO THE SUN.

How the heck....?

There is a lot to learn from Gracie and her kin.

It is so easy to place all of our worth and confidence in each and every thing that we write. That this is what defines us. That this is the one that will do it for me... And when it doesn't go as we plan - we feel like we are failures - or that we don't deserve to call ourselves writers - or that we should go push carts at Walmart - (Ok.. That's just me... And that is only because those bastards get BENEFITS, kid!)

I don't know about you - but I loved when Superfriends came out. Even the crazy apocryphal episodes with the Wonder Twins. Because the show had something for everyone. And don't you know that because there were Superfriends - as a yin to their yang - there was also the Legion of Doom.

Now I ask you -

Who was really happier? Sure - there is some satisfaction ridding the world from evil doers. But were these heroes really happy? They seems full of anxiety and worry - never really getting a chance to have a real life because they were too busy SAVING THE WORLD FROM CRASHING INTO THE SUN.

I don't remember an episode where the heroes ever laughed - until right before the end credits.

Contrast that with the Legion of Doom. Supervillians are always laughing. They love what they do. They don't have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Heck - they would love to destroy not only the weight - but the very world itself!

These guys had joy. Optimism. Satisfaction - if only temporarily. They didn't worry about tomorrow. They only worried about today - and the joy of hurting others for their own material gain.

But they did it with complete and utter abandon.

Besides - they have Grodd - a giant ape who can smash stuff - and the Superfriends just had Gleep - who was only good for carrying the guy in a bucket when he turned into water.

As strange as it sounds - we can learn a lot from the Legion of Doom. Go forth - with abandon and joy - and create mayhem and havoc. Love what you do. Make big plans - and never ever give up - cause maybe this script really is the ONE - And if you fail - don't worry. The next one will be better and more successful. Because there is no jail or asylum that can hold you. It is just a matter of time before the world bows before your greatness.

But you better hurry...

CAUSE HERE COMES THE SUN.....

You're just saying all this crap because you're finally happy. ;)

I've decided that Eternal Optimism is the difference between those who make it and those who don't. It can't be actual skill … or there wouldn't be movies that I can actually rewrite in my head as I watch them.

Really, the main lesson we should take from the Legion of Doom is this: when you have the enemy up against the ropes, DON'T TAKE THE TIME TO EXPLAIN HOW YOU CAUSED THE EARTH TO CRASH INTO THE SUN. Just let it crash. Let the fucker crash, man.
